If we're not currently on a RAM Disk, then it's already been tested. The first time brought more lag, not entirely sure about the second. There's a perfectly good chance it's still being used.

Any lag is caused by CPU usage, as minecraft only utilizes a single core. Currently at 150% CPU core usage.
Currently on an i7 2600 CPU - can't really get much faster; however, I upgrade whenever possible.

i7 Is a very powerful core, as far as i know. They have hyper-threading which means additional virtual cores. If you found a way to use force the server to use all the cores of the i7, two things would happen.

1. There would be no lag! Evaaarrrr.
2. You would be famous in the Minecraft community.

If only we could get the server cpu OC'ed, I know an i7 920 (budget i7) can get to 4GHz stable on air cooling with the right hardware.
