All I know is a diamond axe does the same damage as an iron sword. So if you're pvping a bunch of iron sword wielders, lumberjack style would be fair.

Wooden and Gold: 1 1/2
Stone: 2
Iron: 2 1/2
Diamond: 3
(Numbers are damage of hearts :o and on players without armor)
