So, a new player joins MineRealm. VVolfie, ShaddowDemon, and I all welcome him/her. But every once in a while...

+(ign): Join my server it's great ip is (ip)
+(ign): Join my server it's great ip is (ip)
+(ign): Join my server it's great ip is (ip)
(some mod): /ban (ign) advertising and spamming

Or perhaps

+(ign): Hi can i have materials im new iron pl0x
+(ign): plzzz shaddowdemon i want just some iron plzzzzz
etc.
then possibly
(some mod): /ban (ign) Begging (or harrassing, spamming)

Either way, it's a hassle.

Yes, newbs should read the rules. But they don't always realize that they're supposed to. Even when they do, they don't know where to find the rules. So here's my suggestion (vanilla with a chocolate chip on top):

When a new player logs in, the chat will say (only to them, mind) something like the following:
"Welcome to MineRealm, (ign)! Please follow the red carpet from the spawn area to read the rules. The full list of rules may be found in (direct them to the full list of rules where the nether portal is). Type /yes once you have read the rules. Until then, you cannot use chat or go more than 50 blocks from spawn. Enjoy the server!"

You see what I mean. Possibly, the 50 could be more or less. Or it could just tell them to read the rules, and not force them to, although that's an important part to my mind. I think this would cut down on the following offenses often commited by n00bs:
  • Begging
  • Advertising
  • Swearing
  • Raging due to thinking that someone has violated the rules (by looting them in PVP, for example)
  • General harassment, as well as griefing, stealing, etc.
I am well aware that n00bs can and sometimes will lie. However, this will certainly make them far more likely to read the rules. Those who would lie about it are generally the sort who would break them anyway. So, what do you think? Please post your opinions and vote, and if you think any changes should be made to the original idea, please mention them.

Either way, they're certainly more informed about the rules. You should have voted "Yes, but without them being FORCED to read the rules." if you thought that that was the only bad part, which I assume is the case. Without the /yes'ing, it would just be a message telling them where to read the rules, which would still be very useful. Many rulebreaking n00bs simply don't know that they're doing anything wrong.

Holes in your idea I shall poke.

Firstly, players who refuse to read the help from players/Staff are unlikely to go and read the rules in the portal zone. As for not chatting/being unable to leave Spawn, they can join, see it, type /yes, and be on their merry ignorant way.

If they are going to lie, they are going to lie regardless of what is done. If they have an interest in continuing to play on the server, they will listen to the advice given without special features being put in. If they are here to advertise/rage/spam/etc.. then they will do it regardless.

Also...

Out of many, many thousands of bans, there are 15 results for harassment/begging put together.

I still believe that giving them a message would be a good idea, as despite help from players, n00bs often are so overwhelmed by the many well-intentioned messages that they don't realize where they're supposed to go to read the rules. In addition, as KingSpartacus mentioned, Intelli could make it so that they had to actually walk through the rules corridor to be able to type /yes.

Sheer brilliance. This would definitely be a better option than the one I originally gave.

But you're forgetting the one major principle of noobs...

Noobs can't read. :P

Joking aside, I like where this idea is coming from, but I don't think it should be implemented. Why? Those who are serious about joining will read signs where they spawn, so will know to follow red line for a tutorial.

Those who are not serious about joining and will do what is generally against the rules on their own server, would just go through the signs to cause trouble anyway. It's what determined advertisers do, trust me, I was an advertiser for a server on a different game a few years ago. :3
